Beyond Rock Bottom

Photography. People. Stories. Purpose.

There was a time when I thought photography was mostly about getting the shot.

Good lighting.
The right angle.
Everyone looking at the camera.
A picture worthy of hanging on the wall.

And of course, those things matter.

But somewhere along the way, photography became something completely different for me.

It became about the person standing in front of my camera.

Their story.

Their family.

The season of life they’re walking through.

The things they’ve survived.

The people they love.

The moments they don’t realize they’ll miss until years from now.

That is what Beyond Rock Bottom is about.

It’s about looking beyond the hardest chapter.

Beyond the label.

Beyond the mess.

Beyond the moment someone thought their story was over.

Because I know firsthand that rock bottom does not have to be the end of the story.

I’ve walked through seasons of addiction and recovery, motherhood, loss, rebuilding, unexpected change, faith, heartbreak, and some of the most beautiful redemption I could have ever imagined.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, I picked up my camera again.

But this time, I asked God to help me see people differently.

Not just as subjects.

Not just as clients.

But as people carrying stories that matter.

That changed photography for me.

Now when I photograph a mom looking at her babies, I notice the way she reaches for them without thinking.

When I photograph a couple, I’m watching for the little looks between the posed pictures.

When I photograph a family, sometimes my favorite image isn’t the perfectly posed one. It’s the one where somebody is laughing, a child is running away, Dad is trying to pull everyone back together, and Mom is standing there taking it all in.

Because that’s life.

And life isn’t always perfectly posed.

Sometimes the most beautiful moments happen right in the middle of the mess.

I’ve also had the privilege of photographing people whose stories carry incredible weight.

People rebuilding their lives.

Mothers being reunited with their children.

Families celebrating another chapter.

People who have fought battles nobody would ever know by simply looking at them.

Those experiences have taught me something I never want to forget:

A photograph can become more valuable with time.

Today it might simply be a picture.

Ten years from now, it may be the photograph someone keeps beside their bed.

It may be the image your child shows their children.

It may capture someone you would give anything to hug one more time.

It may remind you of the version of yourself who survived something you once thought would break you.

That’s why I don’t believe photography is only about creating something pretty.

It’s about preserving something real.

Why Beyond Rock Bottom?

The name feels personal to me because so much of my life has been shaped by what came after the lowest places.

There were chapters when I could have believed that my mistakes, my struggles, or my past were the whole story.

They weren’t.

God wasn’t finished.

There was life beyond rock bottom.

There was healing.

There was purpose.

There was identity.

There was restoration.

There was a story still being written.

And I believe that is true for so many people.

We are more than the worst thing we have done.

More than the hardest season we’ve lived through.

More than what other people have called us.

More than the chapter we wish we could erase.

There is always more to the story.

The Stories Behind the Photos

This blog is going to be a little different.

Yes, you’ll see photography here.

Weddings.

Families.

Couples.

Portraits.

Motherhood.

Milestones.

But I also want to share the stories behind the images.

The people.

The moments.

The rebuilding.

The redemption.

The things happening when nobody else is watching.

Sometimes I’ll share pieces of my own story too.

What God is teaching me.

What I’m learning about people.

What recovery has taught me.

What loss has taught me.

What photography continues to teach me about slowing down and really seeing the person in front of me.

There will probably be some behind-the-scenes moments.

Some photography talk.

Some laughter.

Some hard conversations.

And probably a little chaos too.

Because real life usually has some of that mixed in.

Most of all, I want this to be a place where people feel seen.

Looking Beyond the Label

We live in a world that can be incredibly quick to label people.

Addict.

Failure.

Successful.

Broken.

Perfect family.

Single mom.

Professional.

Mess.

But labels rarely tell the whole story.

I’ve learned that some of the strongest people I know have walked through things that could have completely destroyed them.

I’ve watched God restore things that once looked impossible.

I’ve seen painful chapters become the very thing someone else needed to hear to keep going.

And I’ve learned that sometimes changing the lens through which we see someone changes everything.

Instead of asking,

“What’s wrong with them?”

Maybe we ask,

“What have they walked through?”

Instead of seeing someone only for their hardest chapter, maybe we look for the story God is still writing.

Instead of waiting for life to look perfect, maybe we learn to recognize the beauty that is already happening right in front of us.

“Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
— 1 Samuel 16:7

That verse means something different to me today than it did years ago.

Because I’ve learned how powerful it is when someone feels truly seen.

Your Story Is Worth Telling

Maybe your story feels ordinary to you.

Maybe you’re raising babies and trying to remember what day of the week it is.

Maybe you’re planning your wedding.

Maybe your kids are almost grown and you’re wondering how it happened so fast.

Maybe you’re rebuilding your life.

Maybe you’re in recovery.

Maybe you’re grieving.

Maybe you’re celebrating.

Maybe you’re walking through a season you never expected.

Whatever chapter you’re in, don’t wait until everything is perfect to document it.

Your life is happening now.

The messy hair.

The belly laughs.

The little hands.

The wrinkles.

The tears.

The comeback.

The people sitting around your table.

The person you are becoming.

The story God is still writing.

One day, those will be the things you want to remember.

And I would be honored to help you tell that story.

Welcome to Beyond Rock Bottom.

A place for photography.

A place for people.

A place for stories.

A place for redemption.

A place for purpose.

And hopefully, a place that reminds someone that the lowest chapter of their life never has to be the final one.
